Medicinal cures for tinnitus can only be taken so far. While the vast majority of people can be cured there is a small number of people where this doesn’t always work since there is nothing wrong with them physically. However, it has been proven that the problem can arise in cases where the individual is or has suffered from prolonged periods of stress or anxiety. There is however a tinnitus retraining therapy that aims to treat the root cause of the problem.

Tinnitus Retraining Therapy is also known as CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).

CBT is a treatment that aims to analyze the patients reactions to situations to try and identify the root cause of the problem. It is used outside of treating tinnitus as it is a behavioural adjustment program so will also work for a lot of other problems and conditions too.

Identifying the root cause can be quite simple sometimes. In cases of stress, the most common cause of this is the patients line or work or job. However, anxiety can take a lot more investigation and thus a lot longer to start on a readjustment program. The entire duration of the therapy can last up to 6 months.

Once it has been identified, the patient is given an action plan and helped to address the root cause with the doctor they are working with. By changing the negative reaction to the cause, it changes the mental signals that are associated with it and in most cases will prevent the problem from arising again.

If you have exhausted all other avenues of treatment to cure the ringing in your ears then you might want to consider giving the Tinnitus Retraining Therapy a go. It has helped to cure many people just like you and you have nothing to lose from doing so.

In a lot of cases, hearing a permanent ringing noise in your ears is an indication that you have tinnitus. Of course, it isn’t quite that simple. Tinnitus can actually result in many different types of noises, often ringing, hissing, clicking and buzzing. It is also important to remember that these are internal noises only – that is, no one else will be able to hear them except you.

It is estimated that more than 12 million people in the united states alone have suffered from ringing sounds and this can severly impact your day to day life – not only can it play havoc with your sleep pattern and concentration but it can also cause problems in itself such as depression and anxiety. This is why it is important to investigate the cause of your tinnitus today.

The type of sound you hear can sometimes indicate what is causing the tinnitus. For example, hissing is usually indicative of noise-induced tinnitus or when it is whistling or rushing then this is mainly caused by stress.

If you can hear noises in time with your heartbeat then this suggests, most of the time, that you have pulsatile tinnitus.

Any of the sounds and symptoms mentioned here will need to be looked at by a doctor or specialist. Tinnitus is not a disease, not life-threatening but it can be incredibly frustrating for the sufferer. Furthermore, due to the vast number of symptoms and causes it is impossible to know if there is nerve damage without professional help.

The following medical conditions may also cause the onset of tinnitus

Nerve damage from stress or repeated exposure to loud noises

Sinus problems

allergy

long term use of ototoxic drugs such as aspirin

hearing loss (due to age)

head injuries

Anemia

long term use of cosmetics containing Potassium Nitrate

long term use of cosmetics with Salicylates

Change in blood flow to the ears (including any of the above)

The treatment for it varies depending on the symptoms but ultimately it should involve treating the conditions root cause and not the symptoms itself. More and more are being developed with varying results but it can often be as simple as to stop using items that contain Potassium Nitrate or Salicylates, such as exfoliators or toothpaste for sensitive teeth.

Of course, this will not cure every case; as mentioned above, the treatment will need to cure the cause of the ringing noises not the noises themselves. There are a multitude of ways to do this and even if your treatment is likely to last a while there are things you can do to minimize the volume – hearing aids, and special ear pieces that play music to counter the sounds have been developed which both all but remove the sounds while wearing them.

As you can see, there are a lot of options when it comes to treatment. It is more important that you seek help for your tinnitus today since the sooner you start, the sooner you can be rid of the frustrating sounds.

Tinnitus suffers together understand exactly how frustrating it is and the despair it can cause. For some people it is barely unnoticeable yet can still cause havoc in their day to day lives. Others however will suffer from an unbearable buzzing, or ringing in some cases, yet they have to put up with it. In these cases, a tinnitus masking device may help.

A tinnitus masking device is designed to do just that; mask the noises that the wearer would usually have to put up with all the time. More often than not, these are used at night where they are most effective. Since it is a lot quiter during the night with little to no background noise the tinnitus sounds can often be highlighted somewhat. A masking device however will take care of this and at least allow the sufferer some element of controlled sleep.

There are different types of these devices but they usually play soft sounds such as music or what is known as ‘white noise’ which is designed to cut through background noises; the sirens of emergency services often use so their sirens are heard in even the loudest environments. The sounds aren’t very different from having a soft CD playing in the background.

A lot of manufacturers are making all kinds of tinnitus masking devices, such as hearing aids and pillows. Nowadays they can also be tuned to the individual to make sure it is the most effective, since the frequency they hear will differ from person to person.

You could try to mimic this by listening to running water, or even leaving a TV or music playing in the background however, due to the techniques described above, it may not be as effective as a dedicated tinnitus masking device. If you are concerned about your tinnitus and have yet to find relief from the annoying sounds you can hear then you might want to consider one of these devices as a short term solution to the problem.
